I (Pete) have been coach-triming since 1995, cutting my teeth in the early years on leather interiors for more modern vehicles before moving to a classic car upholstery company that specialised in Aston Martins. After many determined years of hard work and expert training I finally became a competent coach trimmer, but with a head packed full of ideas for my real passion, VWs, I knew I was working in the wrong arena. Work just did not fulfil me enough and I longed to let my creative flair loose in the VW scene.
At that point I invested in a quality sewing machine, went part-time at my job and spent the rest of my available and spare time locked away in my workshop, mastering the techniques of re-trimming classic VWs. In the coming years I fully re-trimmed several of my own Dubs as well as countless VWs of all types for both family and friends in the VW scene, until I reached the point where I was confident that I could produce quality stock and custom interiors for any aircooled VW. With a growing reputation it was finally time to realise my dream and Delux Creative VW Interiors was born.
With the help of my twin brother Tim (now a invaluable and permanent member of Delux) we began attending the shows with a small trade stand to get ourselves out there as a credible service to VW enthusiasts. We’re delighted to say that we’ve never looked back, with the work being non-stop from day one.
Along the way we’ve worked on several well-known VWs that have really helped to put us on the map. One is Hayden Watson’s stunning yellow Splitscreen Post Office Panel Van, the cover car in March 2008 for the Volks World magazine. Delux have also retrimmed well known VW builder John King’s last two show stopping rides. His amazing 1968 Crew Cab Bay Window Pickup won trophies up and down the country including ‘Best Interior’ at Bug Jam 2006 and was the cover car for Ultra VW magazine in September 2006. John’s beautiful 1954 Oval Ragtop Beetle was the feature restoration project vehicle in the Sky Discovery Realtime show BEETLE CRISIS II in 2007/2008. Both of John’s vehicles were a real challenge but we’re delighted with the results.
Our aim has always been simply to provide customers with exceptional quality workmanship in every job we undertake, both big and small. Working together to achieve this is immensely satisfying and a lot of fun. We truly love what we do, the VW scene and the people in it. So if you need to speak to someone who will be as passionate about your VW as you are, then drop us a line, we’d love to hear from you. See you at the shows, Pete and Tim O’Brien.
